Poson Poya Day – A Sacred Celebration in Sri Lanka

Poson Poya Day is one of the most important Buddhist religious festivals celebrated in Sri Lanka. It marks the arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka through Arahath Mahinda Thero, who introduced the teachings of Lord Buddha during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.

This sacred day is celebrated on the full moon day in June, with thousands of devotees visiting temples, observing sil, offering flowers, lighting lamps, and taking part in religious activities. The historic city of Mihintale becomes one of the main places of worship during Poson, as it is believed to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka.
