An HV Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of high-voltage electrical systems, including transmission lines, substations, and distribution networks. They ensure that electrical systems operating above 1,000 volts are functioning safely and efficiently in both industrial and utility settings.
Installation: Install, test, and commission high-voltage equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and high-voltage cables.
Maintenance & Repairs: Conduct regular maintenance and inspections on high-voltage electrical equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns. Perform repairs or replacements on defective components.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose faults in high-voltage systems, such as transformer failures, power outages, and electrical malfunctions. Identify issues related to cables, electrical connections, and protective devices.
System Testing: Perform high-voltage testing, including insulation resistance testing, dielectric testing, and power factor testing, to ensure the system is performing within safety standards.
Safety Compliance: Ensure that all work complies with safety standards and regulations, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, PPE requirements, and proper grounding.
Documentation: Maintain records of inspections, maintenance activities, and repairs performed. Report any system failures, incidents, or upgrades.
Emergency Response: Respond to emergency faults in the high-voltage electrical system, ensuring quick resolution while adhering to safety protocols.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineers, system operators, and other technicians to ensure smooth system operations and to coordinate necessary shutdowns or system tests.
System Monitoring: Monitor high-voltage networks for performance issues and identify areas for improvement in system reliability.
Preventive Maintenance: Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and prolong the life of equipment.
Experience: Proven experience (typically 3–5 years) working with high-voltage systems, transformers, or substations.
Technical Skills: Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical theory, circuits, and components. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Certifications: High-voltage safety certifications, such as electrical safety courses, arc flash training, and any relevant local licenses.
Education: A diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field.
Physical Fitness: Ability to work in high-risk environments and at heights (e.g., on transmission poles, substations). Physically capable of carrying heavy equipment and performing manual tasks.
Problem Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving high-voltage system faults.
Communication: Good communication skills to collaborate with team members and report issues to supervisors or engineers.
Safety Awareness: Extensive knowledge of electrical safety regulations and risk management procedures.
Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license may be required, especially if working at various locations.
Experience with Specific Equipment: Knowledge of high-voltage breakers, switchgear, transformers, and protective relays.
Advanced Certifications: Certifications in high-voltage systems (e.g., NETA, IEEE) or other relevant electrical qualifications.
Industry Experience: Previous experience working with utility companies, renewable energy systems, or oil & gas operations.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with power system protection, monitoring systems (SCADA), and automated control systems.
Location: Work in substations, power plants, on power lines, or industrial sites. May involve travel to remote locations for repairs and inspections.
Hours: Full-time, often including shift work, weekends, and on-call availability for emergency repairs.
Environment: Exposure to outdoor conditions, potentially hazardous environments, and high-voltage equipment. Work at height or in confined spaces may be required.
Contract period: 2 years

Working hours: 8 hours a day, 48 hours per week.
Overtime: As per KSA government law.
Vacation: 21 days per year.
