An HV Technician specializes in the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high-voltage electrical systems and equipment. These professionals work on power systems typically ranging above 1,000 volts, ensuring the safe and efficient transmission and distribution of electrical power in industrial, utility, and large-scale commercial environments.
Installation: Install high-voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, cables, and protection systems.
Testing & Commissioning: Conduct high-voltage tests, insulation resistance tests, and functional testing of systems before energization. Ensure systems meet operational and safety standards.
Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on HV equipment to avoid system failures and prolong service life.
Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose faults in HV systems and components; repair or replace defective parts like switches, conductors, and insulators.
Safety Compliance: Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with safety regulations and electrical codes. Implement lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of testing, maintenance activities, equipment performance, and incidents.
Emergency Response: Respond promptly to breakdowns or faults in HV networks and restore power in a safe and efficient manner.
Coordination: Work closely with engineers, grid operators, and other technical staff for system upgrades, shutdowns, and troubleshooting.
Calibration: Calibrate protective relays, sensors, and metering equipment to ensure accurate performance.
Training & Supervision: Supervise junior technicians or trainees and ensure adherence to safety procedures during high-voltage operations.
Experience: Proven experience (3–5 years) in working with high-voltage systems and related equipment.
Technical Skills: Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical principles, circuit theory, transformers, relays, and switchgear.
Tools: Skilled in using HV testing tools such as insulation resistance testers, high-pot testers, multimeters, clamp meters, and phase sequence meters.
Certifications: Certification or formal training in high-voltage systems is typically required. (e.g., HV Switching Operations, OSHA, or equivalent national certification).
Safety Knowledge: Deep understanding of electrical safety standards and PPE requirements for high-voltage environments.
Education: Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field.
Physical Fitness: Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in physically demanding environments.
Attention to Detail: High level of precision and safety awareness due to the hazardous nature of high-voltage work.
Experience with utility-scale power generation or distribution systems.
Familiarity with SCADA systems or substation automation.
Knowledge of IEC and IEEE standards.
Experience in renewable energy systems (solar/wind farms) involving HV connections.
Location: Utility substations, power plants, large industrial facilities, or infrastructure projects.
Hours: Full-time; may include shift work, weekends, or emergency call-outs.
Environment: Exposure to high-risk environments, electrical hazards, and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Contract period: 2 years
