The Refrigeration Technician (Ammonia) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, typically used in food processing, cold storage, or industrial facilities. The role requires technical expertise, hands-on maintenance skills, and a strong focus on safety due to the hazardous nature of ammonia refrigerant.
Install, operate, maintain, and repair industrial refrigeration systems using ammonia (NH₃) as the primary refrigerant.
Conduct daily inspections of compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, and related components.
Monitor and adjust system controls to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Detect and repair leaks, replace defective components, and perform preventative maintenance.
Respond to system alarms, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and perform emergency repairs.
Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and repair work.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company procedures related to ammonia handling.
Collaborate with engineers, safety officers, and plant management for continuous improvement of the system.
Train junior staff or support personnel in ammonia system safety and operational practices.
Proven experience (3–5 years) working with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
Technical certification or diploma in Refrigeration, HVAC, or Mechanical Engineering.
Strong knowledge of ammonia refrigeration principles, system components, and safety protocols.
Experience using tools like pressure gauges, leak detectors, and diagnostic equipment.
Understanding of safety standards such as OSHA, EPA, or local ammonia handling regulations.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, P&ID diagrams, and technical manuals.
Physical ability to work in cold environments, confined spaces, and at heights.
Good communication skills and attention to detail.
Ammonia safety certification (e.g., RETA or IIAR training) is an added advantage.
